Song of the Last Kingdom Series by Amélie Wen Zhao – Series Review

Rating: 8.5 out of 10.

I devoured this series. I have a soft spot for Asian literature. I loved Lan and Zen’s complicated romance that balanced on very different paths taken by both. They seem to start as friends, loved to romantic partners, to enemies, to indifferent friends, and eventually back to lovers. I felt for Lan as she watched the boy she loved be taken over by a demon while also trying to solve her family mysteries and survive the Elantians’ hunting her down for her musical magic.

We learn throughout the series the impact of choices. Zen is quick to make another deal with a demon, while Lan is quick to reject him. Both make choices that seem to be for their good but they tend to regret them.

Additionally, Zen and Lan learn about the truth behind power. They learn that power may be important but it must be used with limitors…it cannot be absolute or it will consume all with destruction. Zen and Lan must make the horrible choice to free the Demon Gods from human control.

The ending was bittersweet. It was inevitable, with both Zen and Lan containing a demon god. To rid the world of these beings, the human body will also die. Zen decides to make the ultimate choice…to choose love over power.
