Queens and Monsters provides readers with explicit steamy scenes between fated (and devoted) mates Rhys and Draygus. We also get a found family, factional conflict between vampire houses, shapeshifting, and even zombies. Oh my! So much happens to Rhysa when she is awakened! Seeing Dray bleeding on the ground outside of the bookstore she works at changes Rhysa’s life. One minute Rhysa is gushing about romance novels with amazing sexual tension, working at a bookstore, and going to college. The next minute she finds that she was hidden from her family and is actually a Samhain (a vampire). She is thrust into a sexual world of magic and vampires. She is a little lost at sea when the book starts but don’t count Rhysa out. She is a force to be reckoned with when her confidence builds and her abilities start arriving.

Dray is the grumpy vampire leader of House Wren that hides a devoted, romantic heart. He is determined to stay away from Rhysa even though fate and his feelings draw them together. He wants Rhysa to have the opportunity to meet and bond with her paternal family, his enemy. Quickly, Rhysa and Dray start their whirlwind romance with secret meetings and multiple sexy scenes. Very Hot!

House Axl and House Wren (Dray’s family) have been at odds for a long while. As Rhysa heads to House Axl to meet and bond with her paternal family, we learn that she is the heir to the house and that there are sinister forces at work. She learns that her mother and father were in love but ended in tragedy and that her mother placed a curse on House Axl in her anger. A curse that ends up hurting Rhysa…to the point that she nearly dies. That close encounter with death pushed Dray to want to burn down the world.

As the conflict builds, we learn that the veil between the human world, the Samhain (the vampire world) and the other side is weakening. The growing number of Samhain and Dregs allows horrible things to bleed into the real world. Dragons, ghosts, and zombies make themselves problematic. Rhysa and Dray have to work together to stop the world from ending…and they can partially post-pone the end. The war between the houses comes to a head in book one but the world-ending blackness is incoming (a cliffhanger that leads to the second book)

Dray and Rhysa are happy and content with each other by the end of the book. Rhysa decides to finish her human degree before she can fall into her place within the Samhain world and as Dray’s mate/wife. House Wren needs to build up defences and connections in the hope of stopping the end of the world.

I had a blast falling for Rhysa and Dray. I really enjoyed the relationship between these two…as they are devoted to each other and burn HOT! I enjoy that all the Samhain have different abilities: telekinesis, shapeshifting, teleportation, and even realm walking. I can’t wait to see what is in store for Book Two.
